Onderdonk at Witte MuseumJulian Onderdonk (1882-1922) The son of painter Robert Jenkins Onderdonk Julian Onderdonk was born in San Antonio. Often called “the father of Texas painting,” Julian Onderdonk studied in New York with  William Merritt Chase. His most popular subjects were bluebonnet landscapes. President George W. Bush decorated the Oval Office with three of Onderdonk’s paintings. His work is represented in the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Dallas Museum of Art and elsewhere.
